Aging changes of the face includes loss of facial volume secondary to changes in bones, muscles, fat, and skin. Restoring fat volumes is an effective method to rejuventate the face.
Lipoaugmentation restores a youthful contour by transferring a patient’s own fat to a collapsed cosmetic unit of the face. This procedure restores sunken eyes and cheeks, thin lips and mouth, and ill-defined jaw lines and chin creating a more youthful appearance.
Lipoaugmentation is performed under local or twilight anesthesia. Fat can be “harvested” from many areas including the abdomen, hips, and thighs. The fat is obtained thru specialized liposuction techniques and the fat is then prepared for transfer into the face. The transfer is carried out with the use of injection cannulas after the region of the face has been numbed with an anesthetic. Variable amounts of fat are injected into each of the desired areas for an appropriate augmentation. Some swelling may be noticeable for several days depending on the extent of the procedure. Fat may also be frozen and stored to permit repeat injections during the year. The effects of the transferred fat may last for years.
Lipoaugmentation may be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as a forehead lift, facelift, blepharoplasty or laser resurfacing to give an overall aesthetic improvement.
